When you receive a request from your friend, you can specify whether you would like to automatically show all posts by your friend with you as a participant on your timeline or whether you would like to review each post before it shows up on your timeline.

If you choose to review each post before it shows up on your timeline, the posts will appear on your timeline but will be visible only to you until you authorize them.
